Colonization of the Moon

La course spatiale n’a jamais été aussi forte depuis le dernier alunissage par les États-Unis en 1969. Chaque nation est impatiente de revendiquer ses droits sur la nouvelle frontière, et il y a actuellement six drapeaux américains sur la lune – plantés par les astronautes d’Apollo. Cependant, en raison du rayonnement de l’espace, le tissu est connu pour devenir blanc et, dans certains cas, se désintégrer complètement. Michael Patten démontre avec sa sculpture Colonization of the Moon la frénétique compétition des pays à vouloir revendiquer son appartenance à un territoire et d’ainsi marquer d’un drapeau les nouvelles délimitations de ses frontières.

The space race has never been stronger since the last moon landing by the United States in 1969. Each nation is eager to stake their claim in the new frontier, and there are currently six United States flags on the moon – planted by the Apollo astronauts. However, due to the radiation of space the fabric has been known to turn white, and in some cases completely disintegrate. With his sculpture Colonization of the Moon, Michael Patten demonstrates the frenetic competition of countries that want to assert their belonging to a territory and thus mark with a flag the new boundaries of their borders.
